By , About.com Guide

Clown Triggerfish

Steve Howard

Scientific Name:

Balistoides conspicillum.

Other Common Names:

None known.

Maximum Size:

About 20".

Distribution:

Indo-Pacific area.

Diet:

This Triggerfish should be fed a diet of meaty foods, including chopped shrimp, clams, squid and fish. Frozen foods such as Mysis Shrimp and enriched marine algae should also be fed. This fish should be fed 3 times per day.

Characteristics:

While larger juveniles and adults of this Triggerfish species will do quite well, the very small juveniles (often sold as "tiny") do not fare so well in an aquarium. This may be due to the frequent feeding requirements of the very small juveniles not being met.

The larger juveniles and adults can become quite aggressive, nipping and even killing smaller, less aggressive fish. The Clown Trigger should be housed in a large tank (100 gallons or more) with plenty of places to hide. This fish is very territorial and may even attack a hand that is inserted into the tank.

Reef Tank Suitability:

As with most Triggerfish, the Clown will pick at corals as well as eat shrimp and other invertebrates.
