Family:

Muraenidae (Moray Eels)

Scientific Name:

Gymnomuraena zebra, formerly Echidna zebra (Shaw, 1797)

Distribution:

Extends from the Hawaiian Islands southward to Polynesia, westward across the tropical Pacific Ocean to the Philippines and East Indies, and across the Indian Ocean to the coast of Africa. Also occurs off Panama, the Galapagos Islands, and Mexico.

Habitat:

Provide with many places to hide, and ample room to move around. Because of this eel's size and strength, rock formations should be stacked firmly to prevent structures from becoming dislodged.

Average Size:

Attains at least three feet (36 inches) in length.

Minimum Tank Size Suggested:

No less than 75 gallons, because it can outgrow a small aquarium in a somewhat short period of time.

Characteristics and Compatibility:

One of the most docile of saltwater moray species, the Zebra Eel is naturally reclusive and stays hidden with only its head sticking out, emerging when food is offered. Once comfortable with its surroundings it can become bold enough to roam about the aquarium in search of food when the tank lights are on. Typically non-aggressive to fishes, even smaller specimens, it's an ideal choice for a fish community tank.

Diet and Feeding:

A bottom-dwelling carnivore, the Zebra Eel has blunt, pebble-like teeth for crushing its favorite prey, crustaceans. This eel may not eat at first, with adult specimens often being difficult to coax into feeding. Live feeder crabs may help to stimulate a feeding response. Juveniles adapt more readily to aquarium life, accepting many fresh and frozen fares such as clam, scallop, crab, shrimp, squid and fish meat. Should be fed several times a week of an amount that satisfies the eel's appetite. It is not uncommon for eels to go into a "hybernation" period, often hiding and not eating for several weeks, or longer.

Reef Tank Suitability:

Not considered safe. Will eat ornamental crustaceans, and may possibly prey on shelled invertebrates.

Guide Care Rating:
