Crown-Of-Thorns Sea Star

From Keoki's Fish Corner, a Crown-Of-Thorns Sea Star (Acanthaster planci). Frequently found at scuba depths feeding upon corals, where the Crown-Of-Thorns appears fluorescent green at depth and has spines which are tipped with venom.

Fisher's Star

From Keoki's Fish Corner, a Fisher's Star (Mithrodia fisheri). This Sea Star is quite rare at scuba depths adjacent to ledges and walls. It attains 20 inches in width and is endemic to Hawaii. The Fisher's Star is closely related to Mithrodia bradleyi of the Tropical Eastern Pacific.

Cushion Star

From Keoki's Fish Corner, a Cushion Star (Culcita novaeguineae), frequently found at scuba depths feeding upon corals. The color ranges from yellow to dark red. Commensal shrimp are usually present on the oral surface.

Red Velvet Star

From Keoki's Fish Corner, the Red Velvet Star (Leiaster glaber) has a relatively soft texture and is rare at scuba depths.

Purple Velvet Star

From Keoki's Fish Corner, the Purple Velvet Star (Leiaster leachi) has a relatively soft texture, is rare in deep water and may appear fluorescent blue underwater.

Spotted Linckia (Comet) Star

From Keoki's Fish Corner, the Spotted Linckia Star (Linckia multifora) has a hard rough texture, is colored pink, red or gray with small red spots. This star grows up to 5 inches across, is locally common in shallow water and is frequently found missing or regenerating lost arms (comets). It is rarely found with parasitic snails on or within body.

Keoki's Crown of Thorns Starfish

Another photo by Keoki Stender of the Crown of Thorns. The Crown Of Thorns (Acanthaster planci) is frequently found at scuba depths feeding upon corals. This Sea Star appears fluorescent green at depth and has sharp spines tipped with venom. It attains nearly 2 feet in size and is found in Hawaii, Indo-Pacific and Tropical Eastern Pacific.
