Even if you know absolutely nothing about aquariums, it isn't really all that difficult to find a great gift for the aquarist on your holiday shopping list. Tank heaters, hydrometers, aquarium books, thermometers, Amquel, algae scrapers and airstones are always a safe bet and always appreciated.

Photo by PriceGrabberThis is a "can't go wrong here" gift. Every saltwater aquarium owner experiences algae build up on their tank glass. Scraping the algae off the tank is part of a normal maintenance routine. Everyone appreciates a new algae scraper that lets them easily remove the algae without even getting their hands wet.

PriceGrabberAlmost every aquarist has a heater in their tank. Unfortunately, they always seem to burn out at the worst possible time (holiday weekend when all of the LFS are closed). Most knowledgable aquarists "try" to keep a back-up heater on hand, but they just never get around to buying one, when there are so many other things that they would like to add to their tanks. Give your favorite aquarist a quality heater and, someday, they will thank you over and over.

Anyone with an airstone driven protein skimmer will consider a few wood diffusers as a gift from heaven. Not exactly the most romantic of gifts, but this is a present that will inevitably be used and appreciated.

Amquel removes harmful ammonia, chlorine, chloramines and many other organic toxins from aquarium water. One of the best features is that you can't overdose with it. Every aquarium medicine chest should have a bottle.

Photo by PriceGrabberArguably, the most frequently used saltwater aquarium tool used is a hydrometer. Unfortunately, most hydrometers are made of glass and frequently break, causing a miniature disaster if the contents spill into the tank. The Seatest Hydrometers are constructed of durable plastic, reasonably accurate, last forever and are always a bargain.

A good aquarium book, with all of its colorful pictures, quite often ends up as a coffee table book and never quite makes it to the book case.
