How To Pack-Up and Move Aquarium Pets

Select Transport Containers
When making plans to pack-up and move aquarium pets such as saltwater fish and invertebrates or freshwater animals, the first step is to find a container or a sufficient number of containers to transport them in.

The container should be made of plastic, but one that has never been used to store any type of toxic material. Items such as new or used cleaned and thoroughly rinsed larger heavy-duty ice chests or coolers, 33 gallon or other adequately sized garbage cans, 5+ gallon buckets (like those from restaurants or food service companies), good sized deep round, square, or rectangular shaped Rubbermaid, Tupperware and similar non-brand name storage containers are good examples of what can be used.

Transport Container Tips

  • Unless you have a small quantity of animals to move, and believe what you have can be combined safely, DO NOT mix or put them all together into one transport container, use multiple containers!!

  • The number of transport containers needed will be determined by the amount and types of livestock you have in your aquarium or aquariums to move, but more importantly by HOW the animals should be grouped and put into the containers.
