Step 5: How To Pack-Up and Move Aquarium Pets

Oxygenate the Transport Water

With the ammonia-eliminating product, and if needed, an antibacterial medication having been added to the water in the transport container, and prior to placing any animals into it for the move, it's time to oxygenate the water. This can be accomplished in various ways:

  • By using an electric air pump with an attached air stone placed into the water.
  • By hanging a battery-operated aeration device on the container, or into the water if it is a submersible type device.
  • Doing it manually by hand. (Take a plastic cup or container, dip it into the water and fill it, then raise it a good distance above the water and slowly, but somewhat virgorously pour it back into the container, repeating the process many times.)

There is no set time for this process, but the larger the volume of water in a container, the longer it should be aerated. As an example, for a 33 gallon garbage can, aerating the water for 15 to 20 minutes should suffice.

Water Oxygenation Tips

  • If there is a sufficient lapse of time from when you initially oxygenate the transport water before putting the animals into the container to get under way, take the time to reoxygenate the water.
  • It will be necessary to take care of the containment water during transit by periodically oxygenating it while on the move, or better yet, by providing a continuous supply of oxygen if at all possible. A battery-operated aeration device is ideal for this purpose.
