Step 4: How To Pack-Up and Move Aquarium Pets

Add an Antibacterial Medication to the Transport Water

Step 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

When fresh or saltwater aquarium FISH are confined to a transport container when being moved, they will emit waste, which in turn can foul up their containment water. Particularly when dealing with larger and predatory species, the water can become so fouled that it completely turns brown and you can't even see the fish in the water. For this reason, especially during a long distance move, and/or when it is not possible to make water changes along the way, adding an antibacterial medication to the transport water of a FISH ONLY container is a smart thing to do. This will help protect the fish from being exposed to contaminants in their own waste that can cause them to become sick later on, which most commonly shows up as bacterial disease related illnesses.

Antibacterial Medication Tips

  • DO NOT add this type of medication to any transport container where corals and other invertebrates, live rock and sand, or any living biological filter based type things are present!
  • Our top product of choice is Nitrofurazone, or a similarly based type medication.
  • If you option not to initially add an antibacterial medication to the water of a FISH ONLY transport container, it doesn't hurt to take some along with you as a safety measure. It is important to take care of the transport container water during transit, but if at any time during the trip you are unable to do a water change, the containment water becomes extremely fouled, or continues to become fouled despite manually removing the waste and/or performing water changes, you can still add it at any given time you deem necessary.
  • Although it is not necessary to add this type of medication to the transport water if you are only moving across town or for moves that may take a few hours, unless of course you are moving heavy-waste producing species that can really foul up the water, this is an ADVISED step to take for long distance trips that require fish to be in transit for a substantial period of time.
