Saltwater Ich: What is it and how do I treat it?

FAQ

By , About.com Guides

Q. What is saltwater ich, and how do I treat it? How can I tell if my fish have white spot disease? What should I do?

A. Velvet, Coral Fish Disease, Saltwater Ich and White Spot Disease are just a few of the common names given to the parasitic diseases Oodinium and Cryptocaryon.

While the outward signs of the two diseases may appear similar at first glance, in reality they are quite different parasites and require different treatments.

The first step in curing Saltwater Ich is to determine whether your fish and tank have the Amyloodinium ocellatum (Oodinium) or Cryptocaryon irritans parasite.

The next step is to choose the proper treatment and apply it to you affected fish and tank. You can find the latest treatments in the Top Parasitic Medications.

Rapid detection, identification and treatment are critical to an effective cure.

Since parasitic outbreaks in a tank are usually caused by placing new fish (stressed out by shipping) in your tank, utilizing a QT (Quarantine Tank) for new arrivals is an excellent method for preventing outbreaks in your show tank. Quarantine tank benefits? explains why.

Many experienced saltwater aquarists have found that using an Aggressive Quarantine/Treatment Tank is an excellent way to prevent transferring a multitude of diseases into a show tank.
