Ken Tam

Scientific Name:

Oxycirrhites typus (Bleeker 1857)

Other Common Names:

None Known.

Distribution:

Indo-Pacific.

Description:

The Longnose Hawkfish has a white body with red striping that runs both horizontally and vertically.

Maximum Size:

To 5".

Minimum Tank Size Suggested:

20 gallons.

Habitat:

In the wild, this fish perches on rocks and corals, waiting for a satisfactory prey to come along.

Characteristics & Compatibility:

While the Longnose Hawkfish is a great mini aquarium candidate, it will occasionally eat ornamental shrimps and may attack other fish with elongated bodies like Firefish and Dart Gobies. It will also eat just about any other fish that will fit in its mouth.

The Longnose Hawkfish can be kept in male/female pairs, but should be introduced to the tank at the same time. This fish is well known for jumping out of uncovered tanks, so cover your tank with a canopy or egg crate.

Diet & Feeding:

The Longnose Hawkfish should be fed once or twice per day. A meaty diet, including marine fish, crustacean meat, Mysis Shrimp and frozen foods is best for this fish. It will also take flake and pellet foods.
