Simple Saltwater Aquarium Do-It-Yourself DIY Wavemaker

Contributed by Don Carner

  • Project: A simple, inexpensive, effective wavemaker.
  • Purpose: To create wave motion in the tank and aid with water circulation.
  • Degree of Difficulty: Moderately easy.
Using wavemakers, oscillators or surge devices (read reviews & compare prices) to create good water current movement in your aquarium is important. You can always purchase these devices, but for the do-it-yourselfer, what's the fun in that? This DIY project is a very simplistic method for creating a "back-and-forth" wave motion using only two powerheads, and no outside electronic devices. Originally I used three powerheads, but since found that only two are necessary to give a nice alternating current. The patterns will vary at first, but eventually the currents will settle down into a "normal" cycle.
