Tropical Fish Collecting Catch Buckets

Once you have managed to capture a little sea critter you have to be able to put it in something, at least until you get ashore or back on your boat. In the fish collection business this something referred to as a catch bucket. Here are a few things you need to consider when buying or designing a catch bucket:
  1. Ability to put fish in easily.
  2. Ability to remove fish easily.
  3. Adequate ventilation (or water flow through).
  4. Durability (If you are planning on using it frequently and for a long time. It's amazing that plastic will become brittle after a period of time when exposed to saltwater and sun.)
The catch buckets that we started out with were Flow-Troll® Buckets. This and other similar types of bait buckets can be found in sport fishing supply stores or catalogs. This bucket is ideal for three or four small fish or one larger fish. They are small buckets, so don't try and put too large a fish in it. The fish will be cramped and injuries may result when putting the fish in or taking it out of the bucket. Plus the fish won't be able to move around in the bucket.

If you are planning on snorkeling and cruising around on the surface, it works great because it has two float cylinders on each side. Attach it with a line to yourself and tow it behind you when swimming. With the holes in the bucket, when towed it will allow clean water to flow through it and keep the water fresh (no ammonia build up). If you are remaining still in one place for a few a while make sure you drain off some of the water and then submerge it to refill the bucket with clean water about every 5 minutes to flush out the bucket and keep the water clean from ammonia build up.
