Coral Beauty Angelfish

by Keoki and Yuko Stender

Family:

Pomacanthidae

Scientific Name:

Centropyge bispinosus (Gunther, 1860)

Other Common Names:

Twospined Angelfish, Dusky Angelfish

Distribution:

Indo-Pacific

Size:

To 3.9 inches

Habitat:

Best kept in a well established live rock aquarium with ample algae growth present for grazing, and provided with lots of shelter.

Minimum Tank Size Suggested:

30 gallons

Reef Tank Suitability::

Although a good choice for larger reef tank environments, this fish may occassionally nip at clam mantles and large-polyped stony corals, particularly if kept in small reef systems.

Characteristics & Compatibility:

The Coral Beauty is a favorite Genus Centropyge Dwarf or Pygmy Angelfish species for aquariums due to its brilliant colors, hardiness, low price and ready availability. This fish is normally not as aggressive as many other Angelfishes, but some individual specimens may be territorial in smaller aquariums, particularly if they have been in the tank for a while.

Diet & Feeding:

Aside from providing this fish with ample live rock for grazing, it should be fed a variety of foods suitable for herbivores and carnivores, such as Spirulina, marine algae, Mysid shrimp, and other high-quality meaty fares. Feed 2 to 3 times per day.
