PO-4 is present in tap water and is organic as well as inorganic in nature. For our purposes, it's the organic variety that is constantly being added to our system. This includes importation via water changes as well as the accumulation from the system's inhabitants. Failure to monitor and remove phosphates can lead to massive algae blooms and can interfere with coral's calcification processes or the laying down of new calcium for skeleton-building.
