Understanding Saltwater Aquaria Terminology

When you are new and just getting into the hobby of saltwater aquarium ownership, knowing what a certain terminology word means or what name is used for a part on a marine animal is important.  When you pick up your first aquarium book and start reading you will run into all sorts of words, terminology and abbreviations you' ve never seen before and ask yourself, "What the heck does that mean?"

To help you better understand the saltwater aquaria lingo, here are some abbreviations that you will regularly see, especially when visiting Saltwater Discussion Boards and Chat Rooms.

  • BIM - Back In A Minute
  • BRB - Be Right Back
  • DI - De-ionization
  • DOC - Dissolved Organic Compounds
  • DO - Dissolved Oxygen
  • FO or F/O - Fish Only Tank
  • FW - Freshwater
  • Harrumf - This word is used in our Salt Talk Chat Room. If you are just lurking and not talking, which is fine, and you do not type something in every 10 minutes, the server will automatically bump you out of the room because of no activity.  Other forms of this word are hurmpf, herumph, hurumph, you get the idea :-)
  • HO - High Output (refers to lighting)
  • IMO - In My Opinion
  • IMHO - In My Humble Opinion
  • LFS - Local Fish Store
  • LOL- Laughing Out Loud
  • Meg/l - Millequivalents per liter
  • MH - Metal Halide Lights
  • NO - Normal Output (refers to lighting)
  • OLS- Online Supplier or Store
  • PC - Power Compact Lights
  • PPM (ppm) - Parts Per Million
  • RN - Right Now Bacteria
  • RO - Reverse Osmosis
  • ROFL - Rolling On Floor Laughing
  • RS- Reef System
  • SG - Specific Gravity, meaning the salinity (salt) content of your aquarium water.
  • SHO - Super High Output (refers to lighting)
  • SW - Saltwater
  • TBPC - Tri-Based Pelletized Carbon
  • UGF - Undergravel Filter
  • UV- Ultra Violet
  • VHO - Very High Output (refers to lighting)
  • :-) - smiling face
  • :-( - frowning face
  • ;-) - winking face
  • :-o - oh my face
