With a few inexpensive components and a few minutes of your time you can easily repair minor leaks in your glass aquarium with these simple instructions.
Difficulty Level: easy Time Required: 30 minutes
Here's How:
- Obtain a quantity of silicone caulking, acetone and a single edged razor blade.
- Locate the source of the leak and mark it with a felt tip marker.
- Reduce the water level in the tank, until the leak stops.
- With the razor blade, scrape the existing silicone from the leaking area and an additional one inch area around the source of the leak.
- Clean the scraped area with the acetone and a paper towel.
- Apply the silicone caulking to the cleaned area, working it into the glass joint area.
- Allow the silicone to cure overnight.
- Refill the tank with water to the desired level.
- Check for leaks.
- Some types of silicone caulking do not work well with glass aquariums. We have used NAPAs clear silicone with great success, but your local aquarium store should have a suitable material.
- If patching the leak from
the outside of the tank does not stop the leak, you will have to patch
it from the inside.
