How To Repair A Small Leak In A Glass Aquarium

With a few inexpensive components and a few minutes of your time you can easily repair minor leaks in your glass aquarium with these simple instructions.

Difficulty Level: easy      Time Required: 30 minutes

Here's How:
  1. Obtain a quantity of silicone caulking, acetone and a single edged razor blade.
  2. Locate the source of the leak and mark it with a felt tip marker.
  3. Reduce the water level in the tank, until the leak stops.
  4. With the razor blade, scrape the existing silicone from the leaking area and an additional one inch area around the source of the leak.
  5. Clean the scraped area with the acetone and a paper towel.
  6. Apply the silicone caulking to the cleaned area, working it into the glass joint area.
  7. Allow the silicone to cure overnight.
  8. Refill the tank with water to the desired level.
  9. Check for leaks.
Tips:
  1. Some types of silicone caulking do not work well with glass aquariums. We have used NAPA’s clear silicone with great success, but your local aquarium store should have a suitable material.
  2. If patching the leak from the outside of the tank does not stop the leak, you will have to patch it from the inside.
