DIY Coil Denitrator

Over the past 7 years or so, no other article that I have written has generated the continuing response and inquiry as has my Coil Denitrator.

Written at a time when I was struggling with accumulating nitrates in my 75 gal reef system, the idea of a hands-off device that would assist in my normal maintenance and husbandry chores seemed almost too good to be true. It took several attempts to get a fully-working design over the period of several months.

To date, I have had emails from as far away as Australia and South Africa wanting specifics and assurances on materials choice, dimensions and construction advice. So, after answering literally hundreds of these I’ve decided to update that original article, add a few more specifics and address those, “FAQ’s”!

The  diagram along with this article illustrate the main cylinder, the ball valve and pump assemblies. In reality, these are all the components needed to establish a nitrate-removal system on any saltwater application. So, let’s begin:
