How To Combat Rising Saltwater Tank Temperatures - Part 1

Evaluating and Resolving Overheating Problems

By Stan & Debbie Hauter, About.com

When it comes to keeping an optimal temperature of a saltwater system steady, frustration levels can rise just as much as the aquarium's temperature does.

To solve a perplexing overheating problem and keep your cool, first you need to understand where heat comes from and evaluate why your aquarium is overheating in the first place. If it is NOT due to hot summer weather conditions, then ask yourself these questions:

  • Is the aquarium kept in room where there may be a lot heat generating objects close by or around it? (i.e.; TV, VCR, oven, lamps, etc.)
  • Aside from the moving the aquarium, can any of the heat generating objects be moved instead?
  • How close is aquarium to the wall(s)? Does it get circulation around it?
  • Can your aquarium be placed in a spot with more ventilation or air movement surrounding it?
  • Do you have a basement you can put the aquarium in for viewing where it may be cooler?
  • Is your light hood vented, especially if you are using metal halide lighting?
  • Are you using the correct type and wattage of heater or heaters, and is or are they working properly?
  • Are there other pieces of equipment "inside" the aquarium that may be contributing to the over heating problem? (i.e.; powerheads, pumps, etc.)

If any of these questions apply to you, try resolving the problem by making some changes. If not, then chances are sweltering weather conditions are upon you. So now what do you do? That's simple. Run an air conditioner. If this solution is not plausible, there are other simple ways to keep rising hot weather tank temperatures down.
