Guide Review - Liquid Test Kits by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals

Don't Let The Labels Fool You Reflected in our Test Kits Poll as one of the top brand names used by aquarists that maintain fish-only or fish-only with live rock systems, but also liked by reef keepers. Reviewing the manufacturer's page we found the labeling on some of the tests confusing. Some are shown as freshwater kits, but are the same ones used for saltwater testing (i.e. the Freshwater Nitrite test kit). Despite the labeling confusion, our consensus is that the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals' Liquid tests with their liquid solutions are easy to use and provide fairly fast, accurate readings for the standard water tests an aquarist should perform when keeping a saltwater or reef aquarium.

Cheap, easy to use, not always accurate, Member Capsazn

I used to rely on API for basic tests (Freshwater NH4, NO2, NO3, pH). When I decided to try out a saltwater aquarium this year, I picked up an API Reef Master Test Kit. It is a much less expensive test kit than most brands offer for Phosphates, Calcium, Nitrate, and KH, but it isn't worth it. I got an off the chart reading for my calcium level the first time I tested with the API Kit that gave me pause (>600 mg/L according to the instruction sheet). I asked a more experienced friend of mine about it and he loaned me his test kit from another manufacturer. The kit I was loaned included a reference sample for 438 mg/L that the API kit also gave a high reading on (about 580 mg/L). When I tested with the Calcium test kit associated with the reference sample, the reference sample read correctly (~440 mg/L) and my tank registered a safe 450 mg/L. I found this is not an uncommon occurrence with the API Calcium test, according to my LFS and some reviews online. Luckily I was able to get a full refund on my kit, but I have decided not to rely on API in the future.
