The Bottom Line
Inexpensive wavemaker, which constantly redirects water flow in tank, creating surface agitation which assists in water/air gas exchange.
Pros
- Inexpensive submersible wavemaker.
- Constantly redirects water flow in tank.
- Agitates water surface for greater gas exchange.
Cons
- Reported high failure rate in early models.
Description
- Constantly redirects water flow in a tank with the sweeping motion of the exhaust valve.
- Can be used to boost UGF efficiency by drawing more water through the substrate.
- Constantly agitates the water surface to increase gas exchange.
Guide Review - Powersweep Powerheads/Wavemakers
The idea/method of the Powersweep Powerhead by Zoomed is excellent. These are compact, relatively inexpensive wavemakers which are easy to use. These units would work very well for smaller reef tanks, generating a constantly changing wave motion. The Powersweeps can be attached to a UGF system, increasing its efficiency and, at the same time, providing the tank with wave motion. The downside to these powerheads is that the early models have reportedly experienced a high failure rate. The latest word is that the plastic impellor shafts have been replaced with metal shafts along with some other modifications which have greatly improved their reliability. These powerhead/wave makers are excellent investment for the small reef tank owner.
