Tunze, and others, manufacture in-tank models that go way beyond the co-current style.

The larger Counter-Current designs aid the aquarists that is looking at larger capacity "gunk" removal. The rail mounted Tunze Venturi model leads this niche of the market. Utilizing their patented rail-mounted philosophy, a complete filtration system including protein skimmer is possible...all right there at the top, rear of your aquarium!
However, this highly efficient skimmer can be modified to be used without the remainder of the rail system and can even be used in a sump! Tunze now markets a sump-specific version of this pioneering design. For the sake of expediency, I am going to try and avoid discussing anymore individual brands as there are too, too many and I will certainly omit someone's favorite!
