The earth's oceans are filled with a diverse variety of fishes that feed on a wide range of marine plant and animal life. For this reason it is important to know what a particular fish type or species primarily eats in nature, so that when it is kept in a saltwater aquarium system you can provide it with the proper nutritional diet it specifically requires.

To better understand the natural eating habits of saltwater fishes, and what principle foods they require in their diets, we have compiled a list of major fish families and cross matched each to the coded food group numbers listed in our table of what may be considered the 11 primary food groups of marine fishes in nature.
