Authored John P. Hoover, "Hawai'i's Sea Creatures" is an excellent invertebrates indentification and characteristics reference book for any saltwater aquarium or reef tank owner to have on hand.
  • Description - An invertebrates classifications, identification, and characteristics profile book that contains 366 pages with over 500 full-color photographs throughout. Although only profiling Hawaiian invertebrates, many are related to other species found worldwide, which means a majority of the family and species traits are the same or very similar.

  • ISBN #1-56647-235-0 (Hardcover - Published 1998; Hard to Find)
  • ISBN #1566472202 (Softcover - Published 1998)

Although written and intended as a guide for snorkelers, divers and beachgoers visiting Hawai'i, with the more than 500 species photos of Sponges, Cnidarians (Hyrdoids, Jellyfishes, Sea Anemones, and Corals), Worms, Bryozoans, Molluscs, Crustaceans, Echinoderms, and Tunicates contained in Hawai'i's Sea Creatures, it is an excellent marine invertebrates identification reference book for any saltwater aquarists to have.

Each of the above mentioned Phylums are profiled, and the photos are displayed with scientific, common, and even Hawaiian name information.

Within the Phylums the animals are then broken down into Subphylums, Classes, Orders, and Families, with individual species pictures named and profiled with a mixed variety of habitat, characteristic, reproduction, size, and other general information about them. Specific aquarium care or feeding information is not provided, but some species do have suitability for aquariums noted in their profiles.

Hawai'i's Sea Creatures contains a wealth of information. It is a book we have found to be a valuable reference resource when writing many of the marine invertebrate profiles we have compiled here at About Saltwater Aquariums for our readers over the years, and we have no doubt that you will find it an informative resource as well.

About the Author: John P. Hoover is a noted diver, animal lover, and best-selling author of "Hawai'i's Fishes" and "A Pocket Guide to Hawai'i's Underwater Paradise".
