Starting a Tank: How many gallons, type of filter, etc.?

Q. Can you please tell me how many gallons I should start with. My family and I have kept a freshwater aquarium for almost nine years now. I feel I am ready to start a saltwater aquarium, and thinking about getting my son one for Christmas, but I feel I need more info such as:

1.) How many gallons to start.
2.) Type of filter to start with.
3.) Types of fish and plants to start with.
4.) Price of a good tank for a beginner.
5.) Heaters.
6.) Where to put it.
7.) Reef setups, if I should or shouldn't use. A. We suggest you start out with a fish-only tank, then in the future you can convert over to a reef system, after you and your son have gotten some experience with saltwater under your belts.

In answer to all of your questions above, first read our Aquarium Set Up Checklist, then our "10 Basic Steps to Starting a Saltwater Aquarium" and "How to Set Up a Saltwater Aquarium - Part 1: Aquarium Location & Choosing a Tank" articles. From there refer to the many resources throughout this site, such as the Beginners Corner, Aquarium Set Up, Aquarium Care and all the other topic resources to learn all you can before getting started. -- Debbie & Stan Hauter
