Why Air Stones Stop Producing Bubbles and How To Clean Them For Reuse

Air stones or diffusers stop producing bubbles over time when the air passages in the ceramic, wood or other material they are made of becomes clogged with:
  • Dust and other microscopic airborne matter that is sucked up by the air pump, pushed through the air line hose and down into the air stone(s).
  • Micro, macro and/or coraline algae growth.
  • A slimy detritus type build up.
  • Hard calcium deposits.
  • Salt crystal build up.
You can overcome the air particulate problem by just buying a good quality air pump that has an easily changeable prefilter at the intake, such as with Schego Air Pumps. As far as the other reasons that contributor to the lose of air stone bubble output, you need to either:

If you choose to clean and rejuvenate old clogged air stones, after you have finished cleaning them they should be in good enough shape to be reused at least once, if not a couple of times before having to dispose of them. Cleaning them takes very little effort, anyone can do it, and by not having to buy new air stones as often, it is a money saver as well.
