Many marine aquarists don't give it much thought (tho they should) but the biological filter is the very heart of every aquarium. No aquarium, fresh or saltwater, could survive for long without a healthy one. It wasn't all that long ago (shows you my age) that few aquarists even knew what nitrosoma bacteria was, let alone its value or how to cultivate it. The evolution of biological filtration, from the controversial Under Gravel Filter, to the , to canister filters, to Science of Biological Filtration in Marine Aquariums is quite interesting.
