It's a fact of life: If you have an aquarium, someday you will have a nuisance algae problem. Whether it is Red Slime Algae (which isn't really an algae, it is Cyanobacteria but that's another discussion), Green Hair Algae, or Brown/Golden Diatom Algae.
While Curing Brown Algae and Curing Hair Algae outbreaks isn't all that difficult (the "Vodka Method for Reducing Nitrates" is effective and gaining popularity), it can be time consuming and frustrating.
There are also "good types" of algae. Most saltwater aquarists take great pride in having a nice crop of purple Coraline Algae covering the surface in their tanks. Other types of algae that aquarists strive to cultivate in their tanks include Halimeda Algae, Cup and Brush Macroalgae, Caulepra Algae and a number of Red Alga, which can be cultivated in a sump or refugium for fish food.
