High Temperatures

A pertinent reef tank temperature question, particularly during the summer months, is "how high is too high"? When do you really need to crank up that electron sucking chiller you paid a half a month's wages for? You may be surprised.

Forums: Another Temp question: My other half was reading a book about corals (I think) and it said to keep the water between 81F and 84F is that true?

I have done a lot of dives in the Solomon Islands area. During those dives the temperature (any time of year, any weather) was 29 or 30 degrees C. On one occassion the temperature registered 31 degrees. That is 84 to 86 degrees F! I have seen some magnificent coral gardens.

I know that water temperatures arelower further south (further from the equator). The answer to water temperature is probably to the higher end of the range, but taking into account the species (and genetic variation within species).

Thanks for all the useful information – I am getting ready to set up a piece of my underwater world in my lounge room – I will probably need to extend the house after I get going! :-)
