Easy, Sure-Fire DIY 55g FOWLR Tank
Here is a plan for a 55g FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) tank. This set up includes a tank, filtration, power head, light hood and a list of fish and invertebrates which are colorful and actually get along with each other. Start here with the basics, then gradually move up to a full reef tank.

I have a 55 with live rock. I just replaced it with a drilled 55. It has cycled.
I have a Clown and a yellow tailed blue, several red legged and blue legged crabs, a star, and one Fire shrimp, and one skunk shrimp. They all get along well. Oh, I just picked up 3 snails that bury themselves in the sand and I had a turbo.
I like to increase the critters but have not decided yet.
Nasos are nice, they had a small one but I think it will grow too large. But I like them.
Thanks
Bill
I think the fish selection is a bit agressive for a 55 gal tank. I had a Yellow Tang and Flame Angel in my tank and the bioload was just too high after a year or so when they grew.
So although those fish are beautiful, I would recommend replacing some of the recommended fish with smaller fish such as Chromi’s and perhaps a Neon Goby. Good luck!
I have a 35 hex tank with 2 small clowns, a purple firefish, a very small hippo tang and a flame angel. The angel and the tang began to loose color and their fins began to disappear. The angel finally died and the tang is still the same. The clowns & the fire fish are fine and all fish swim & eat great. My local store sold me a vitamin suppliment (Reef Solution) which they believed would help but after a week there is no change. Do you have an opinion of the problem as I would hate to loose the tang also. Thanks
