Mangroves - Nature's RO/DI Filters

Wednesday August 20, 2008
Mangrove Refugium Mangrove plants have been used to remove dissolved proteins, nitrates, phosphates and other toxins in both saltwater and freshwater aquariums for a number of years. These inexpensive, low maintenance plants siphon water through their roots, removing and actually using the toxins for food.

A number of aquarists who use Mangroves in their aquarium systems say that they have removed their protein skimmers, because the plants remove the proteins from their tank water before it can be skimmed.

There are a number of ways to incorporate the amazing Mangroves in a saltwater aquarium system. The Mangroves can be installed in a sump, placed directly in an aquarium or in a DIY Hang-On-Tank Acrylic Refugium.
